Betty Jean Marsalis Thomas Taylor, 85, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May
25, 2024. Betty was born February 11, 1939, in Inverness, Mississippi to the parentage of the
late James Marsalis, Sr, and the late Bessie Chandler Marsalis Banks. She was
preceded in death by her late husband H.B. Taylor, sister Mildred Marsalis, her son
Ronald (Lynn) Thomas, and grandchildren, Jamal Thomas, Arthur Potts and
Ronald Jackson. Betty was the granddaughter of the late Reverend R. L. and Edith
Chandler and the late Ed and Elmira Marsalis.
Betty grew up in Inverness, Mississippi. She attended Sunflower County
Mississippi Public School. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age at
Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her grandfather,
Reverend R. L. Chandler.
In 1957 Betty relocated to Pascagoula, Mississippi. She worked several jobs
(Holiday Inn, Pascagoula Police Department School Patrol, and as a loyal and
dedicated employee for forty-plus years with First Federal Savings and Loan).
Betty was a family-oriented person. She loved to cook, shop, decorate, and garden.
She was an active member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Mission Auxiliary
Board, until her health declined.
Betty will forever be remembered in the hearts of her children: Norris Thomas of
Gautier, MS, Norman Thomas, Sharon Watson, Wallace Thomas all of Pascagoula,
MS, Darrien Thomas, of Atlanta, GA, Roshell Thomas of Pascagoula, MS, Cortier
(Theresa) Thomas of Gautier, MS, Stephanie (Jimmy) Hill of Moss Point, Sonia
Monagan, and Derek (Monica) Taylor of Pascagoula, MS. Seventeen
grandchildren, Twenty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; her
Two Sisters: Joe Ann (Donald) Denning, Warner Robins, GA and Devone
Bovastro, Pascagoula, MS; Two Brothers, James (Silvia) Marsalis of Memphis, TN
and Eddie (Alice) Marsalis of Moss Point, MS.; Ed Marsalis of New Orleans, LA,
Eddie B. (Shauna) Marsalis, Auburn, AL, and James L.( Brina) of Greenville, MS
and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
