Gail Miller Obituary

Gail Catherine Miller was born on March 27, 1942 in Baltimore, MD. She was a healer, an artist, a mother, a brave world traveler and a great lover of cats; a woman of many talents. She was an extraordinarily unique individual forging her own path through life and always living on her own terms even when they were contrary to societies’ expectations. She passed away leaving behind a legacy of creativity, laughter, love, and of course one grumpy cat who refuses to be removed from Gail’s home.

In her younger years, Gail’s husband worked for Motown Records, and the couple brushed shoulders with the likes of The Supremes and The Temptations. Bobbie Rydell’s parents trusted the couple to shepherd and protect their child, as did many other parents in the industry, a responsibility she embraced with charismatic warmth and care.

She also worked as a graphic designer for stores like Strawbridge’s and Wannamaker’s in Philadelphia. She always brought her artistic eye and inventive spirit into everything she touched. Her creativity flourished in many forms – painting watercolors, drawing cats, and nurturing her beloved gardens. An avid reader, she delighted in the written word, always seeking inspiration and knowledge in the pages of her books.

Gail had a deep respect for the Earth and animals. She was an avid gardener and at times even a subsistence farmer. She found endless joy in helping things grow and rescuing feral, and not so feral, cats.

Gail was also a healer and became an accomplished acupuncturist, having studied Chinese medicine in China at the Olympic training center and the hospitals in both Beijing and Shanghai.

Her eccentric and vibrant spirit made her unforgettable. She laughed easily and shared her joy freely. Each Christmas, those closest to her looked forward to “Vititus” her signature homemade Lithuanian holiday drink, a tradition that warmed hearts as much as it did glasses. She was also a true connoisseur of cats, sharing her home and heart with more feline companions over her lifetime than could ever be counted.

Gail’s adventurous nature led her fearlessly across the globe. She spent years travelling in South America and lived in Colombia. Those years of travel were some of her most treasured memories and adventures. At home, she navigated single parenting with aplomb, raising her daughter Alicia with strength, warmth, and unwavering devotion. Together the two even lived in Mexico during Alicia’s childhood, an adventure that reflected both Gail’s courage and her curiosity about the world. The bond between mother and daughter was unshakable, a very special and profound relationship filled with love, trust, and friendship. Gail loved and respected Alicia and was so proud of her grandson Lucas whom she thought was the most amazing child on the planet. She was also incredibly proud of her granddaughters Mikeala and Olivia who she saw as talented, caring, unique individuals who also shared her affection for animals, both horses and cats.

She is survived by her daughter, Alicia Thompson; her son-in-law, Scott Thompson; her grandchildren, Lucas Thompson, Mikeala Williams, and Oliva Thompson; her sisters Debby Lindemann-DiPaolo and Dawn Blanton.

Gail will be remembered for her eccentricity, her obsession with cats, her passion for life, her generosity of spirit, and the beauty she cultivated in her gardens, her art, and above all, her relationships.
