Larry Dean Rodgers, a lifelong resident of Pascagoula, Mississippi, passed away on January 26, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on April 24, 1953, Larry was a pillar of the Pascagoula community for over seven decades. A dedicated professional and a man of strong work ethic, he spent 35 years as an Insulator in Department 17 at Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding. Following his retirement in 2012, he continued to be a faithful and active member of Union Missionary Baptist Church, where his presence was a source of strength for many.
Larry was the beloved husband of the late Velma Greer Rodgers, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage. He was a man who truly loved his family and served as the life of every party. Known for his selfless nature and quiet generosity, Larry was the first to step in and help—whether it was washing dishes, cleaning up, or tending to yard work—often before he was even asked. He took immense pride in his home and his cars, and he was known throughout the neighborhood as a sharp dresser who loved new clothes. You could always tell Larry was on his way by the sound of the music coming from his car long before he pulled into the drive.
An avid sportsman and a die-hard fan of the New Orleans Saints and the Pelicans, Larry loved watching football, basketball, and various other sports. However, his favorite pastime was fishing. He was also a master in the kitchen and at the grill; to his knowledge, no one could BBQ or fry fish better than he could. When he wasn’t cooking or fishing, he found great joy in playing cards and dominos, where he was famous for his spirited "smack talk" and competitive nature. His warmth, humor, and willingness to help anyone in need made him a beloved figure throughout the community.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Claudia Morris Rodgers and Bilbo Rodgers; his wife, Velma Greer Rodgers; his brother, Billy Charles Rodgers; his stepson, Kintarus Greer; and his grandson, Kellie Remmone Guy.
His legacy of love and laughter lives on through his children: Tirrany (Aaron) Frost of Moss Point, MS; Kenya (Michael) Johnson of Missouri City, TX; Laterrica Rodgers of Pascagoula, MS; Shamera Greer of Pascagoula, MS; and Quincy Greer of Pascagoula, MS. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert (Ruth) Rodgers of Pascagoula, MS; Julia (William) Holmes of Moss Point, MS; Pamela Hull of Biloxi, MS; Gloria (Terry) Watkins of McDonough, GA; and Michael Rodgers of Pascagoula, MS. His memory will be forever cherished by his grandchildren: Kendall Guy, Kayla Frost, Jordan Johnson, Jabari Monroe, Kylee Greer, and Tremayne Baptist, along with a host of former coworkers from the 17 Department at Ingalls and the memory of his late friend, Bennie Seales.
