Mary passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 15, 2023 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She was born Mary Frances Lucas to John and Elizabeth Lucas on September 5th, 1938 in Halifax county, North Carolina. She is survived by her daughter Libby King; her son and his child; brothers, John (Fran) Lucas, Danny (Grace) Lucas; sister, Sue Dills and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edd King; parents, John and Elizabeth Lucas and most special friend, Jimmy Dean.
Mary spent her life as a nurse, working in Roanoke Rapids Hospital, Roanokke Rapids, NC and Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. She joined the United States Air Force and worked as a nurse in Thule, Greenland during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She was a nursing instructor for 30 years. She taught at Forsythe Tech in Winston Salem, NC.
Most of her life was spent in North Carolina until she moved to Mississippi in 2016. She spent the last years of her life in an assisted living facility (Truewood) in Ocean Springs, MS. A very special thank you goes out to the entire staff there for the love and care that they gave her. Another special thanks to the Hospice caregivers during her last days there.
As per her wishes, we will not be holding any service after her passing. Instead, we will celebrate her beautiful life! She will be sorely missed by family and many dear friends.
