Matthew Steadman Obituary

Matthew Caperton Steadman lived a life of love and passion that came to an all-too-soon close on Saturday January 13, 2024 at the age of 48.

Matthew, or simply “Matt” as his relatives and close friends know him, was brought forth into this world on June 30th, 1975 to James “Jim” W. Steadman, Sr. of Gautier, Mississippi  and the late Jane Lawrence Bowers in Pascagoula, MS. By the time he graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1993, Matt had developed a love for the arts. Allowing his passions to guide him, Matt continued his education in pursuing an Undergraduate Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Mississippi where he proved to be quite talented in ceramics. After obtaining his degree from Ole Miss, Matt opened up a pottery studio on his family’s property in Gautier, Mississippi called Marsh End, where he perfected his craft. However, after several years, he chose to close the studio to pursue a Masters Degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. After earning his Masters Degree, Matt secured a position at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he became a celebrated professor, passionately teaching classes related to the Visual Arts with an emphasis in ceramics. Over the course of his career, Matt was honored with numerous awards for his excellence in ceramics and became well respected around the coast for the quality of his work.

Over the course of his life, Matt had the blessing of growing up with several siblings: Webb Steadman (Yvonne), Harriet Wiley (Jerry), Tom Steadman (Maritza), Mary Dantone (David) who he held dear to him and Lester “Butch” Tuck (Tricia), Steven Tuck (Shelley) and Tammie Tuck Moffatt. As an adult, he had the privilege of becoming Uncle Matt to numerous nieces and nephews through the years. Genna Steadman Casey was a special niece who later became more like a sister to him.  Matt was also blessed to have many (unnamed) friends, many of which became life-long. In more recent years, he had the joy of gaining two step-daughters, Emily “Emmy” Grace Bains and Ramsay Gabriel Bains who he truly loved as his own. However, the light of his life was his daughter, Eve Tyler Steadman (mother, Skye Steadman), a girl after his own heart, who had the very special privilege of choosing his most creative hairstyles as well as hair colors for him which he loved every minute of. She meant the absolute world to him. Finally, there is his wife, Trinity Vaughan Steadman. Rarely do you find a love so great and so pure as that which Matt had for Trin; she was and is still his sunshine and his love for her was evident in every way. Whether it was cooking for her, slipping sweet notes into her lunch pack for her to find, or the occasional romantic, “err,” that would sometimes make others a little uncomfortable, his love for her was uncontested. He is loved and will be missed by many.

Matt’s life can be summed up in two words: Love…and passion. As we remember Matt and celebrate his life, may we reflect on our own and strive to live such a life of love and passion as Mathew Steadman. The family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date. He is loved and will be missed by many.
