Steve McElroy Obituary

Steven F. McElroy, a cherished, long-time resident of Gautier, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the age of 59. Born on July 16, 1966, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, he was the beloved son of Jimmy Frank McElroy and Peggy Jo McElroy (Walls). Steven’s life was filled with remarkable experiences, none perhaps more legendary than the 1983 State Championship Title game. Asked to take the mound, he pitched the game of his life, leading his fellow Panthers to a hard-fought 6-4 victory over the Hattiesburg Tigers at Mississippi College’s Frierson Field and securing the third state title in the program's history.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Steven was defined by his selfless devotion to his community, family, and friends. Known to many as "The Washer and Dryer Man," he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His gentle spirit and infectious laughter had a unique way of brightening the lives of those around him, and he possessed a rare ability to offer comfort and support with open arms. A man of abundant faith, Steven’s spiritual life was beautifully nurtured by his mother; in a final act of devotion, he spent the last two years of her life by her side, ensuring she received the very best care.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Peggy McElroy; his grandparents, E.O. and Bessie Walls; and his son, Arne Jenkins.

He leaves behind a large and loving family, including his wife, Jennifer McElroy; his daughter, Stephanie L. Gibbs (McElroy), and son-in-law Savon Gibbs; and his step-daughters, Tiffany M. Davis and Julie N. Johnson. He is also survived by his brothers, Jimmy D. McElroy and Johnny G. McElroy; his sister-in-law, Paula Lacharite; and six grandchildren: Mickenzi S. McGill, Sytianna M. Gibbs, Nevaeh E. Gibbs, Savon A. Gibbs Jr., Taelynn P. Delancey, and Warren K. Delancey. He will be deeply missed by his lifelong friends Bud Mills, Todd West, Bobbi Bowman, Chris Crowley, and Jeffrey Hovermale, as well as his faithful cat, Angel, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

Following the service, all are welcome to gather at the fellowship building next to the church to share memories, enjoy refreshments, and continue the celebration of Steven’s well-lived life.
